Laura Ellen Bacon works with natural materials such as willow, reed or stone — en masse — creating a lot of her work directly on site. Her work is entirely abstract and may feel strangely similar to organic growth and natural phenomena.
At first glance, it can sometimes be difficult to assess, if it has been shaped by the natural world (creatures or plants perhaps) or the human hand. Drawing on a desire to create enclosures and partially inspired by nest-like forms, she enjoys making work that feels oddly familiar. She tries to generate an interest that touches a primitive nerve that we cannot precisely locate and is motivated to draw attention to the peculiarities of the natural world.
Much of Laura Ellen Bacon’s work is large enough to stand inside and is driven by a desire to build and shape form with her hands. The accumulation and layering of materials appeal to her; as does the experience of working with her hands in a seemingly repetitive way.
